The Greek and Roman's take on Jupiter:
In Roman mythology, Jupiter was the king of heaven and Earth and of all the Olympian gods. He was also known as the god of justice. He was named king of the gods in the special meeting that followed his overthrow of the god Saturn and the Titans.
Jupiter granted Neptune dominion over the Sea, and his other brother Pluto dominion over the underworld. Jupiter's wife was Hera, who was very jealous of the attention that he paid to other goddesses and women.
Alcmene was one of those who interested Zeus, (as the Greeks knew him) and her offspring with him was the world-famous Hercules, who spawned many legends. In some legends, Alcemene is a goddess herself, the virgin goddess of midwinter, midwinter's moon, the new year, stateliness, beauty and wisdom.
The goddess of justice herself, Themis, was one of Zeus' mates, and one of their daughters was called Astraea. Zeus and Themis were also the parents of the Horae, the Greek goddesses of the seasons. Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Hebe, Hephaestus, Hermes and Artemis were also offspring of Zeus by various full goddesses, specifically Metis, Leda, Maia, and Hera.
One of the lesser known offspring of the divine god was Britomartis, a virgin huntress who killed herself rather than let a man touch her, and was transformed into a full goddess. Her mother was Carme, but little more than her name is known of her.
Zeus' daughter Artemis travelled with a band of huntresses, and one of those, Callisto, became one of Zeus' lovers, and to protect her from Artemis' wrath, Zeus transformed her into a bear. This was a common device of protection, one he also used for Io, turning her into a white heifer to ensure her safety from Hera, his legal wife, who was often furious at his wandering eye.
In other words Jupiter (and the greek legend Zeus) was a very busy man. He had many children by many different woman. Which may explain why Mako-chan has a crush every 10 minutes.
Info on the planet Jupiter:
Jupiter is acctually an outer planet as you can see from the image. The outer and inner planets are seperated by the space.
Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and has the most number of moons that we currently know about which is 16. It is several times larger than the Earth (every other planet in the solar system could fit easily inside of it) and is the fourth brightest object in Earth's skies, beaten only by the sun, the moon, and Venus, though occasinaly Mars will outshine it. It's day is approximately 9 Earth hours long, and it takes 11.86 of our years before Jupiter completes one of it's own. Jupiter, a gas giant, has no actual solid mass like some of the other planets, but is instead comprised of varying gases and clouds, including helium, methane, and hydrogen. Deep within the planet, however, the pressure is so immense that the gas starts becoming liquid instead. A few scientists have begun to refer to Jupiter as a fluid planet lately. It was recently discovered that Jupiter has a faint ring of it's own, just as some of the other outer planets do. In contrast to Saturn's bright rings, Jupiter's rings are darker, for some currently unknown reason. The pull of it's gravity is well over twice that of Earth, and it gives off approximately twice the heat that it takes in from the sun.
Many of (the Roman god) Jupiter's lovers later became the names of the many moons of Jupiter.
Eight of Jupiter's moons, the outermost, orbit in an entirely different direction than the four which are closest to their mother planet, and it has been suspected that the eight outer ones were once asteroids that got too close and were captured by Jupiter's powerful gravity. The four moons which are closest to Jupiter are Metis, Adrastea, Amalthea, and Thebe. Metis and Adrastea are theorized to be the source of the material that makes up Jupiter's ring. Io, Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, Leda (Lita?), Himalia, Lysithea, Elara, Ananke, Carme, Pasiphae, and Sinope are the other satellites that orbit this world. The date of their discoveries range from 1610 to 1979, and vary in size from smaller than our own moon to larger than our planet.
Perhaps one of the most famous features of Jupiter is the Great Red Spot, a huge storm that humans have known of for at least three centuries. It's discovery is credited diversely with Giovanni Domenico Cassini or Robert Hooke. The oval-shaped storm is easily large enough to hold two Earths, and is approximately 12,000 by 25,000 km.
The name of one of Jupiter's Moons Leda could be the source of the American name for Mako-chan which is Lita. The fact that Jupiter is the largest of all the planets could also attribute to Mako-chan's height. The more you dig around in the mytholigy of the planet and the God it was named after the more things began to focus in the plot. Naoko obviously did some studying on the Roman legends. Allthough she did mix up the legends of Pluto and Saturn. (oops!)
